A referral from a GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician is not needed to attend counselling. However, Medicare rebates are available if you have a referring Mental Health Care Plan from one of these professionals. 

Having a Mental Health Care Plan means your out-of-pocket expense is halved and, that you may be eligible to receive the Medicare rebate for 10 sessions per calendar year. Talk to your GP to determine if you are eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan (you will need to book a longer time with him/her to assess your eligibility).

If you have private health insurance, you will need to check with your provider to determine if you are covered for psychology services.
