Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that begins during childhood and continues throughout the lifespan. It affects how a person behaves, interacts with others, communicates and learns (NICHD). The presentation and severity of ASD symptoms can look different as a person gets older. Developmental difficulties a child may experience include:
· communication
· social skills
· cognitive and executive function abilities
· mannerisms, habits and behaviours
· interests and activities
· sensory sensitivities
· motor skills.
A referral from a Paediatrician, child psychiatrist/psychiatrist or GP is needed to book an ASD assessment for primary and secondary aged students.
